Scuba diving is an exciting sport well known for its underwater thrills. Diving sites like the Similan Islands off Thailand provide breathtaking landscapes and coral reefs for many divers. If you want to try diving in these islands, the following information can help you get started.

The Similan Island

Similan Island diving near Thailand is full of underwater thrills where you could dive into shallow stretches with coral reefs or rocky gorges. The latter takes you through some amazing landscape beneath the sea. Just off the west coast of the islands, the diving gets a bit challenging, due to larger depths and currents. However, you won’t be disappointed, because you will find incredible granite rock formations and an abundance of coral and aquamarine life. Sea creatures such as sea moths, ghost pipefish, and ribbon eels are a photographer’s delight. You can be sure to find these in some well-known sites like east of Eden and elephant head.

Diving and Snorkeling

When planning for a diving trip in Similan Island, a short pre-diving course is necessary. This can help prepare for the actual experience. As being underwater can be overwhelming, the right techniques and equipment are necessary for an enjoyable and safe experience.

When snorkeling, you need a snorkeling kit to help you swim below the water surface. This provides an outlet above the surface to let you breathe. Snorkeling also allows you to view the seascape and reefs from above.

Diving Materials

For a regular diving in Similan Island, you need an oxygen pack attached to tubes and mouthpiece along with goggles. Since you will not be doing heavy diving, a full diving body suit will not be necessary.

The initial moments can be a bit daunting, but once you get over the first ten minutes, you’ll feel at ease. The fear is more in the thought of not being able to breathe underwater.

Training in a pool before Similan island diving is preferable for beginners where breathing techniques can be mastered for diving in a tense free mode. A basic training in diving is also necessary for a safe and enjoyable experience.
